Wall art: DIY! What better way to start the new year of Country Fox Exploring than to show our dedicated readers our most recent project. Our home has been evolving and changing since we first moved in in 2009.

Originally the room was the living room. After many years of construction on our first floor, we were able to move the living room downstairs. We then started remodeling the room. The carpet was ripped up and replaced it hard wood. We added some other nice touches and finished our dining room.

The dining room has been wonderful. At some point the idea formed that if we could find some stained-glass windows, we could decorate the walls with them. Last March we met with an antique dealer and found some beautiful stained-glass windows.

The Start

Furniture was moved out of the way. We removed artwork from the walls. We began taking measurements. This was a little tricky since the other side of the wall is the stairwell. We assembled the work crew and all the tools we needed.

we double checked the measurements and began. We found the studs using a stud finder and some simple tapping. Then we carefully began cutting holes in the wall. We had to be cautious of the wiring.

Once we cut the dining room side, we then cut the stairwell side.

Once the hole was complete, we had to create a window frame. There was a lot of measuring and cutting going on. Just a side note on construction. It is dirty work. Cutting through drywall creates a lot of dust. It also equally attracts and terrifies pets. I kept the cats secluded in the bedroom so that they wouldn’t attempt to jump through the hole in the wall.

Somewhere in the Middle

The windowsill went into place and the windows were set in their new home. Temporarily. There was some fine work that needed to be done to make sure the windows would remain secure. Finally, they were ready to be secured.

A long weekend of hard work was finally at an end. All we had to do was buy some trim and some corner squares, stain them and hang them. That was all. Except the price for trim is currently ridiculous.

We were hoping to spend very little on this project. We spent about $300 for the pair of windows. This was a great deal for antique stained-glass windows. The wood for the windowsill was left over from previous projects. It was going to cost over $200 for a few pieces of trim and some corner squares. We took a step back and considered our options.

Thankfully due to one of our other DIY projects, I did a blog about our Wainscotting, we had a bit of wood left over. In the past, we have made our own trim. The only downside to making trim is that it is very time consuming. Tools used can become dull and need sharpened. Although we knew this was going to be a more time-consuming process, it was going to save us a couple hundred dollars.

The End of Wall Art-DIY

It took several days of hard work and challenges, but finally the trim was done. It was an easy last step. We measured and cut each piece. They were then placed around the windows. The room was placed back into order and our DIY project was complete.

It is so nice to have our dining room complete and back in order. The dining room light is our next DIY, so stay tuned!
